Circa Arts Gallery is housed in a building that was built in 1904 by Charles McCormick. Over the years it has been used as a drug store, grocery, radio shop, flooring and tile business and finally an aluminum and siding company until 1988.
Kathy Reddy White and Gary White bought the building in January of 1999. They rehabilitated the entire building, starting with two upstairs apartments that had not been occupied for over twenty years. The apartments and the east side main floor retail space was ready for occupancy in November of 1999.
The west side retail space was rehabbed and was finished in time for a holiday show in December of 2000. In January Kathy and a core group of artists opened CircaArts Gallery with limited hours. The name of the gallery reflects their mutual interest in antiques (Circa) and Art (Arts)
Kathy opened the gallery full time December 1, 2002. Current hours are Wed – Fri 10 –6 and Sat 11 – 3. The gallery currently represents over 60 local artists.
The Charles McCormick building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
CircaArts Gallery commissioned Dave Blodgett to paint a mural on the east side of the building to draw attention to the gallery and shops inside. The scene is a turn-of the-century version of the shops that are currently housed in the building – CircaArts Gallery and Inspire Me! (an upscale women’s clothing and accessories shop).The mural also features a glimpse into the past by depicting the East Race gateway framing a bridge leading to the South Bend Woolen Factory. This was the first facade grant issued by DTSB (downtown South Bend, Inc.) and was completed in 2003.
